Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions that protect against viruses, Trojans, worms, hacker attacks and spam, presents a new analytical article on the emergence and development of malicious programs for mobile devices – e.g., smartphones and PDAs.

This article, “An overview of mobile device security” which appears on www.viruslist.com, is Kaspersky Lab's first article that brings together all of the available data about contemporary information security threats affecting users of smartphones and PDAs.

“Currently, there is no threat of a global epidemic caused by mobile malware,” the author Alisa Shevchenko, a Kaspersky Lab virus analyst writes. “However, the threat may become real a couple of years down the line - this is approximately how long it will take for the number of smartphones, experienced virus writers and platform standardization to reach critical mass. Nevertheless, this does not reduce the potential threat. It's clear that the majority of virus writers are highly focussed on the mobile arena.”

More than one year has passed since the discovery of Worm.SymbOS.Cabir, the first Bluetooth worm for Symbian OS. What has happened in the world of mobile devices during this year? What will be the outcome of today's unstable equilibrium? When can we expect the first real “mobile” epidemic? Alisa Shevchenko, a Kaspersky Lab virus analyst, provides insight into these and many other issues related to mobile malware.
