“Krab Krawler” tool by Kaspersky Lab helps making Twitter safer
While becoming more and more popular with Twitter, Facebook and co., shortened URLs might contain links to malicious websites. The new “Krab Krawler” tool by Kaspersky Lab makes Twitter now safer by analysing tweets posted on Twitter.
About 26 percent of all tweets posted on Twitter contain URLs, of which many are shortened via shortening services like tinyurl, bit.ly or myloc.me. By obscuring the true URL, clicking on a shortened link in a tweet can contain several risks such as being led to malicious websites or spam websites. The new “Krab Krawler” tool by Kaspersky Lab supports the virus analysts in the labs to detect attacks over Twitter by analysing the millions of tweets. “We are scanning nearly 500,000 new unique URLs that appear in Twitter posts every day”, says Costin Raiu, Chief Security Expert Kaspersky Lab EEMEA. “Of those, between 100 and 1,000 are malware attacks.”
The tool examines every public post that appears on Twitter, extracting any URLs they contain and then analyses the web page they lead to. In addition to the “Krab Krawler” tool, every Internet user should ensure he is protecting his laptop or computer via a comprehensive security solution such as Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 or Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010.
