Kaspersky Lab announces publication of an article entitled 'Rogue antivirus: a growing problem'

Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of Internet threat management solutions that protect against all forms of malicious software including viruses, spyware, hackers and spam, announces publication of an article entitled "Rogue antivirus: a growing problem". The author, Vyacheslav Zakorzhevsky, is a senior malware analyst in the company's heuristic detection group.

Rogue antivirus programs pretend to detect malicious programs on a user's computer and then offer to "treat" them for a fee. Needless to say, the money ends up in a cybercriminal's pocket. The chances of being infected by this type of malware have increased dramatically over the last few years.

The article examines how rogue antivirus programs infect computers, the techniques they use to mask their presence and evade detection, as well as presenting statistics and offering advice on how to prevent infection in the first place.

"The growing popularity of rogue antivirus solutions among cybercriminals suggests that this is a very profitable business," says the author. "The scare tactics used increase the likelihood of success. Once again, we recommend installing a legitimate antivirus solution. This way you can be sure your computer has reliable protection and you haven't just thrown your money away."
