Kaspersky Lab Announces New Level of Protection Based on Whitelisting - on a Dedicated Web Portal

Kaspersky Lab announces the opening of a new website dedicated to whitelisting and Application Control technologies

Kaspersky Lab announces the opening of a new website dedicated to whitelisting and Application Control technologies. Whitelisting – which uses a database of clean, non-malicious software – was first introduced in the company’s consumer products in 2008. Since then the technology has been constantly modernized, the database of legitimate programs has greatly increased in volume, and now is included in all key Kaspersky Lab solutions, both consumer and corporate, together with Application Control technology. The portal is intended to highlight the importance and effectiveness of these technologies, particularly in the sphere of corporate IT security.

Visitors to the whitelist.kaspersky.com portal can learn more about these security technologies, which together make up the “Whitelist Security Approach”. The portal also contains information for software developers, who are invited to collaborate with Kaspersky Lab for the timely entry of new versions of legitimate programs into the database and the prevention of false positives. Commenting on the new portal, Vladimir Zapolyansky, Head of Independent Software Developer Relations at Kaspersky Lab, said: “In combination with the traditional approach to IT security, whitelisting and Application Control offer a new level of protection for users. To underline the importance of these technologies we have created a dedicated portal, which has already become a central know-how and reference hub for system security based on whitelisting.”

Besides information for existing and potential customers and partners of the company, the Whitelist Security Approach portal presents up-to-date information on legitimate software, divided into Kaspersky Lab’s trustworthiness classifications. The site also describes the advantages of the whitelisting principle in general, and in particular how it is utilized in the company’s products. On the basis of data collected via the cloud-based Kaspersky Security Network, whitelist partners, and other sources, at present the database of legitimate software runs to more than 300 million entries, and every day to the database is added information on more than a million executable files.

The great potential of whitelisting has been repeatedly confirmed by industry experts. In particular its advantages have been highly praised by Gartner analysts. The full, up-to-date and constantly expanding database of legitimate software allows not only to expedite the process of scanning files, but also, in conjunction with Application Control, it can contribute to the creation of much better security systems based on the “default deny” approach at organizations where only bone fide programs in the “permitted” category – as determined by the systems administrator – are allowed.
