Failure To Run The Update Or Not Being Protected With Up To Date Internet Security May Leave Users Vulnerable To Attack
Kaspersky Lab, a leading provider of Internet security software solutions that protect against viruses, Trojans, worms, spyware, crimeware, rootkits, phishing, hacker attacks and spam advises all users of Microsoft Windows Vista, 2000, XP, Server 2003 and 2009 operating systems to install the latest Windows operating system update MS08-067 (www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx) issued by Microsoft to ensure their computers remain safe online. PC users who do not install this update may be vulnerable to attack which could result in online identity theft or Internet fraud - and it may be possible for cybercriminals to remotely gain access of a user’s computer.
Once installed, this update will fix the flaw and help contain the spread of potentially malicious programs that could hit the Internet in the next few days, which may attempt to exploit the identified flaw in this popular operating system.
According to Kaspersky Lab, this flaw is similar to that detected in 2003/2004 that led to those massive worm epidemics, including those widespread attacks caused by LoveSan, Sasser and Rbot. One malicious program developed in China has already been confirmed. Trojan-Spy.Win32.Gimmiv.a, which uses this flaw is designed to steal user passwords. Customers using up to date Kaspersky Lab technology are already protected.
David Emm, Senior Technology Consultant with Kaspersky Lab, offers the following advice: “You need to ensure that every computer you use to go online is safe from all forms of attack that could harm its performance and, more importantly, be used to steal your personal information for ID theft and other fraud purposes. The best way to make sure you remain safe online is to install the very latest Internet security software, but also to ensure your Windows operating system is up to date.”
