At the end of 2012 a Russian patent was issued for a sophisticated Kaspersky Lab technology capable of repairing computers infected with malware. The technology, integrated into Kaspersky Lab’s latest security solutions, is not only capable of preventing infections but can also treat a computer system infected with active malware and remove all traces of its activity.

Quick Facts

  • The new patent describes technology used to protect the operating system against different kinds of malicious activity.
  • The technology has already been successfully used in Kaspersky Internet Security 2011-2013, Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows, Kaspersky PURE 2.0 and other Kaspersky Lab solutions.
  • The technology was created by Kaspersky Lab specialists Mikhail Pavlyuschik, Vladislav Martynenko and Yuri Slobodyanyuk.
  • Kaspersky Lab’s portfolio in Russia amounts to 65 patents. The company currently has over 120 patents issued by the relevant authorities in the USA, Russia, China and the EU.

Patent description

Patent № 2468427 granted to Kaspersky Lab describes technology capable of protecting computer systems from the effects of malicious programs, e.g. unauthorized operations with files and changes to the Windows registry. Using data from event logs, the technology identifies malicious activities and any links between different system objects. Once the full picture of an infection and its effects has been established, the technology restores data: it cancels operations performed with files and changes to the registry, removes files or registry records created as a result of malicious activity, breaks unauthorized network connections and terminates processes launched by malicious objects. The technology uses backup copies of system files created automatically by the Kaspersky Lab product to perform the recovery process.

The patented technology has already been used in Kaspersky Lab products such as Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows. Independent test results testify to its high effectiveness – throughout 2012 Kaspersky Lab’s solutions consistently received the highest scores in system clean-up and recovery testing.
