Kaspersky Anti-Virus outperforms more than 15 rival antivirus products to win prize from respected security software site
Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 has received the Gold Proactive Protection Award from respected security software site Anti-Malware Test Lab.
More than 15 antivirus products, including Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009, Symantec AntiVirus 2009, Dr.Web 5.0, Eset Nod32 Anti-Virus 3.0, and BitDefender Antivirus 2009, took part in a series of tests to evaluate the effectiveness of proactive protection.
The test procedure began on 3 December, 2008 and was concluded on 18 January, 2009. Testing was conducted on a computer running the Windows XP SP3 operating system and was set up to test the effectiveness of heuristic protection. This meant the update feature was disabled in all the antivirus products, i.e., the antivirus databases were “frozen” on the day testing began. In order to conduct the test, a total of 5166 unique malicious program samples that actively spread throughout the Internet during the test period were collected along with 15121 clean files.
The antivirus products not only had to demonstrate a high level of detection but also generate as few false positives as possible. According to Anti-Malware Test Lab’s results, the Kaspersky Lab product demonstrated the best balance between heuristic detection (61%) and the number of false positives (0.01%).
“Signature-based detection is becoming less effective at combating today’s threats. Dynamic and heuristic protection modules have now come to the fore,” says Alexander Gostev, head of the Global Research and Analysis Team at Kaspersky Lab. “Over the last year, Kaspersky Lab has been actively developing, and is continuing to develop, proactive detection methods. The test performed by Anti-Malware Test Lab shows just how impressive our achievements in this sphere are.”
