IDA Pro plugin developed at Kaspersky wins 2024 IDA Plugin Contest

February 18, 2025

Kaspersky is proud to announce that IDA Pro plugin, hrtng, has been awarded first place in the 2024 IDA Plugin Contest. The annual competition, organized by Hex-Rays, recognizes the most innovative and impactful contributions to the field of software reverse engineering.

IDA, or Interactive Disassembler, is a software tool used by cybersecurity professionals, malware analysts and reverse engineers to analyze and understand the inner workings of complex software, including malicious code. Developed by Hex-Rays, IDA Pro is widely regarded as the industry standard for software reverse engineering.

This year's IDA Plugin Contest attracted 20 submissions from developers around the world, showcasing both new and established talents in the community. Hrtng plugin, developed in the company's Global Research and Analysis Team (GReAT), emerged as the winner due to its comprehensive set of features designed to simplify and accelerate the reverse engineering process.

The plugin marks a significant advancement in malware analysis. Hrtng empowers security researchers to optimize their IDA Pro workflows, significantly reducing the time and effort required to analyze and deobfuscate complex code structures. By streamlining the reverse engineering process, the plugin enables the community to more effectively detect and prevent sophisticated cyber threats.

Offering a comprehensive set of capabilities, hrtng features advanced tools for decrypting, deobfuscating and patching code, as well as recognizing library functions and transforming intricate code structures into more readable pseudocode. The plugin also introduces cutting-edge features, such as an advanced algorithm for untangling convoluted program flow and a manual method for resolving virtual function tables, making it easier for analysts to navigate and understand sophisticated software. Released as open source, hrtng empowers analysts to not only use these advanced tools but also adapt and extend them to meet evolving reverse engineering challenges.

"We are thrilled to see hrtng recognized as the best IDA Pro plugin of the year. Our goal was to create a tool that addresses key challenges in reverse engineering, and this recognition is a testament to the value it brings to the community. We've poured a decade of experience into developing hrtng, and it's gratifying to see our hard work acknowledged by the industry," said Sergey Belov, the developer of the project.

Contest judges praised hrtng for its well-documented features, which include detailed video tutorials and its intuitive integration with IDA Pro's interface. Many of the plugin's functions work automatically, while others are easily accessible through context menus, making it simple for users to leverage its powerful capabilities.
