What to see

Chichén Itzá, Yucatán: witness Mexico’s ancient legacy

Few places feel as historically powerful as Chichén Itzá. It’s one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a crucial archaeological site of the ancient Maya civilization, uniting architecture, astronomy and spirituality in one place.

The Pyramid of Kukulkán, which dominates the site, was designed with such precision that during the spring and autumn equinoxes, light and shadow create the illusion of a serpent descending its steps.

Walking through the ancient ball court and past the Tzompantli, where the Maya displayed skulls of sacrificed warriors and captives, provides you a glimpse into a civilization that was highly advanced and deeply ceremonial.

Local tip:

Chichén Itzá

Arrive early in the morning before the heat and crowds build up. The atmosphere is much quieter and more immersive.

Bacalar Lagoon, Quintana Roo: disconnect completely

Bacalar is often called the “Lagoon of Seven Colors,” and once you see the water the name makes sense. Varying depths and sunlight create numerous shades of blue-green that stretch across the freshwater lagoon.

Unlike Cancún or Tulum, Bacalar feels calm and unhurried. There are no massive resorts or crowded beaches, just quiet docks, kayaks gliding across still water and afternoons that stretch on and on. It’s one of those rare places where you genuinely lose track of time.

Sunrise on the lagoon is worth waking up early for — the water becomes completely glass-like before the day begins.

Coyoacán, Mexico City: experience local life

Mexico City is packed with museums, markets and iconic landmarks, but the Coyoacán district offers a slower and more intimate side of the capital. Cobblestone streets, bookstores, cafés, tree-lined plazas, and musicians playing in the evenings give the neighborhood a relaxed, nostalgic atmosphere.

It’s a place where people linger: friends meet for coffee that turns into dinner, families spend afternoons in the square, and mariachi songs drift through the streets into the night. It’s a place where weekend conversations happen and traditions continue across generations.

Coyoacán

Wander without a strict plan. Some of the best moments here happen by accident: a hidden café, street music or a bookstore you didn’t plan on entering.

Hidden gem: Mérida

Many travelers skip Mérida on their way to Cancún or Tulum, but the Yucatán capital offers a calmer, more local experience. Known as the “White City” for its limestone architecture, it is filled with colonial streets, live music and incredible regional food.

A typical day may see you exploring nearby cenotes or ancient ruins such as Uxmal before returning to a city that feels relaxed rather than overcrowded.

And make sure you try a freshly made marquesita (crepe-style dessert) before you leave!

A defining local
experience: Día de los Muertos

Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is one of Mexico’s most meaningful – and often misunderstood – traditions. It isn’t a mournful holiday but a celebration of memory, family and connection.

Families build ofrendas (altars) decorated with candles, incense, photographs and the favorite foods and drinks of loved ones who have passed away. And while some cities hold massive parades, others focus on candlelit cemetery visits, music and family gatherings.

Participating respectfully offers a clear window into Mexican culture.

What to eat and drink

Mexican food goes beyond what many visitors expect – each state has its own specialties, ingredients and cooking traditions. Some essentials to try:

Tacos
From grilled meats to seafood and vegetables, tacos vary enormously depending on the region. Try both restaurant versions and late-night street stands.
Mole
A rich, complex sauce made with spices, chilies, nuts and sometimes chocolate, usually served over chicken.
Pozole
Traditional soup made with hominy corn and meat, topped with lettuce, radishes, onion, oregano, and lime.
Tamales
Steamed corn dough wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves, filled with savory or sweet ingredients.
Aguas frescas
Refreshing fruit- or flower-based drinks perfect for hot afternoons.
Atole
A warm corn-based drink flavored with vanilla, cinnamon, or chocolate.

Local tip:

Café Avellaneda in Coyoacán is my favorite spot known for exceptional local coffee in an intimate setting.

La Fondue is a cozy place for conversations over tea, which I deeply enjoy.
