Exploring Colombia: from Caribbean fortresses to Andean peaks
What to see
Cartagena de Indias: step into Colombia’s colonial history

Cartagena’s Walled City feels cinematic. Bright colonial buildings, churches, plazas and cafés fill streets that once formed one of the Spanish Empire’s most important strongholds in the Americas.
Because Cartagena controlled great wealth and trade routes during the colonial era, it became a target for pirates and rival European powers. To defend it, the Spanish built one of the most sophisticated military defense systems in the New World, surrounding the city with enormous walls and fortresses that still stand today.
Every walk through the old city reveals another hidden courtyard, rooftop terrace or small café tucked between centuries-old buildings.

Explore the Walled City early in the morning or after sunset, when the heat softens and the streets feel more magical.
Tayrona National Park: explore jungle and sea

Few places combine landscapes as dramatically as Tayrona National Park. Located near Santa Marta on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, it blends tropical beaches, rainforest and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains – the highest coastal mountain range globally.
The region is deeply connected to Colombia’s indigenous heritage. Adventurous travelers can trek to Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City), an ancient settlement older than Machu Picchu that once served as a spiritual and political center for the Tayrona civilization.
Even without the trek, Tayrona is extraordinary: jungle trails opening onto untouched beaches, crystal-clear water and a real sense of connection to nature.

Stay overnight nearby if possible. Sunrise in Tayrona is an unforgettable moment.
El Cocuy National Park: go beyond the tropical stereotype

Many people imagine Colombia as tropical and humid, which is why El Cocuy National Park feels so unexpected. Located in the Eastern Andes, it is home to Colombia’s largest glacier system, with snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes and high-altitude wilderness stretching across the horizon.
Reaching places like Ritacuba Blanco requires preparation and acclimatization, but the reward is extraordinary. The park’s páramo ecosystem, filled with towering frailejones plants, feels almost otherworldly.
What makes El Cocuy meaningful for many Colombians is its connection to family and heritage. Exploring the region while listening to stories from people who grew up there can transform the landscape into something deeply personal; not just beautiful, but alive.

Altitude here is serious. Spend time acclimatizing before attempting longer hikes.
Hidden gem: Caño Cristales

Caño Cristales, often called “the river of seven colors,” is one of Colombia’s most surreal natural wonders. Located in Serranía de la Macarena National Park, it becomes vibrant shades of red, pink, yellow, green and blue thanks to an aquatic plant called Macarenia clavigera.
Visitors can hike through the surrounding landscape, swim in natural pools and see rock formations shaped over thousands of years by the current. It’s the kind of place that feels unreal – and a reminder of how wild Colombia still feels.
What to eat and drink

Food changes dramatically across Colombia’s regions, but some dishes and traditions connect the entire country.
Coffee is perhaps the most iconic. In Colombia, a simple cup of black coffee is called a tinto, and sharing one is part of everyday life across every social setting and region.
Other must-try dishes include:
Lechona
Slow-roasted pork traditionally stuffed with rice and peas.Tamal
Corn dough filled with meat and vegetables, wrapped and steamed in banana leaves.Ajiaco
Bogotá’s comforting chicken and potato soup.Arepas
Flatbread made of ground maize dough that may be stuffed with a filling, found everywhere in Colombia, with dozens of regional varieties. Pan de bono: Warm cheese bread that pairs perfectly with coffee.
For dining, I enjoy Leo Restaurant in Bogotá, internationally known for its biodiverse approach to Colombian cuisine.
And for coffee lovers like me, Café San Alberto (born in Quindío in the heart of the Coffee Region) offers some of the country’s best experiences which I deeply enjoyed.
Staying safe during your travels in Colombia
Stay protected while you travel with Kaspersky
A trip should be about the journey ahead, not about worrying whether your phone, your accounts, or your personal data are safe along the way. But travel is exactly when your digital life can be exposed: you're booking things on the go, tapping links from unfamiliar senders, logging in to new apps, and connecting to whatever Wi-Fi you can find. Kaspersky helps you stay protected through all of it, so you can focus on where you're going.
It often starts before you even leave. As you book flights, hotels, and transport, Kaspersky Premium helps protect you from common travel scams, for example, fake booking links, misleading travel offers, and scam messages designed to catch you mid-plan. With Safe Messaging feature, it can flag suspicious links and messages before you tap, whether you're confirming a reservation, arranging a ride, paying online, or chatting on the go with a local guide.
With Kaspersky eSIM, you can get online as soon as you arrive without searching for a local SIM card or relying on unsecured public Wi-Fi. Whether you need to check directions, contact your accommodation, book a taxi or let your family know you've arrived safely, staying connected from the very beginning of your trip is simple and convenient.
Once you're on the move, the Wi-Fi at airports, hotels, cafés, and train stations becomes part of everyday travel, and that's where Kaspersky VPN comes in. By encrypting your internet traffic, it helps you use public networks more safely when you browse, check your plans, or access your accounts. It also helps you stay connected to the services you rely on at home — from banking and personal accounts to your favorite apps, websites, and streaming services — even while you're abroad.
And because travel means juggling more accounts than usual — airline apps, hotel sites, booking platforms, email, payment services — Kaspersky Password Manager keeps your credentials secure and within easy reach from your mobile device. It can create and manage strong passwords so you're not relying on weak or reused ones, and it lets you log in quickly wherever you are. You can also keep important travel documents (passport details, tickets, and booking confirmations) in a secure vault, so they're ready the moment you need them.
Together, these tools help protect your personal data across your devices and alert you to potential risks as you go, so the only thing you have to think about is the journey, not your digital safety.
