Exploring Argentina: From buzzing Buenos Aries to peaceful Patagonia

What to see

Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires – experience Argentina's cultural heart

Buenos Aires has an abundance of beautiful buildings, but few can match Teatro Colón, which feels unique the moment you step inside. An opera house that opened in 1908, it’s famous for ornate architecture, marble staircases and gilded halls – plus some of the finest acoustics in the world.

And you needn’t be an opera aficionado to enjoy it. There’s something magical about wandering beneath the domed ceilings of the Golden Hall and imagining decades of performances echoing through the building.

Book a guided tour during the day if you can’t attend a performance. The backstage stories are as fascinating as the architecture itself.

El Chaltén, Patagonia – chase dramatic landscapes

Deep in the southern Santa Cruz Province, El Chaltén is the kind of place that makes you feel small in the best possible way. Known as Argentina’s trekking capital, the tiny mountain village sits beneath the granite peaks of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre, surrounded by glacier-fed rivers and endless hiking trails.

An especially memorable moment here comes before sunrise. The hike to Laguna de los Tres is steep and cold in the early morning darkness, but watching the first sunlight hit Fitz Roy, turning the mountain bright orange and pink, feels ethereal. And for some minutes, the landscape goes completely still.

Patagonia weather changes fast. Pack layers, even in summer, and start hikes early before the winds pick up.

Bariloche, Río Negro – discover a home from home

Bariloche sits on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, surrounded by forests and snow-capped Andean peaks. It’s often described as Argentina’s alpine town, with wooden lodges, chocolate shops and ski slopes in winter. Its charm ensures that many visitors return.

The town produces a comforting rhythm of lakeside morning, afternoon hikes and evenings watching the snow fall with a comforting hot chocolate. And for many Argentinians, it’s tied to childhood trips and family holidays, giving the town a warm familiarity no matter the season.

Visit outside peak ski season if you want quieter trails and calmer lake views.

Campo de Piedra Pómez – unearth a hidden gem

Northern Argentina hides some of the country’s most surreal landscapes, and Campo de Piedra Pómez in Catamarca Province may be the strangest of them all. Formed by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, the landscape is filled with giant white and pink pumice rock formations sculpted by wind into shapes that look almost alien.

Unlike Patagonia’s famous trails, it is largely untouched by mass tourism. You can walk for hours surrounded by silence, with nothing but volcanic stone stretching to the horizon.

It’s the kind of place that reminds you how enormous and varied Argentina really is.

Go with a local 4x4 guide (the roads are remote, but the journey through the desert landscapes is part of the experience).

A defining local
experience: Sharing mate

In Argentina, drinking mate is a ritual. Friends gather in parks, on beaches or after work to share a hollow gourd filled with “yerba mate” and drinking through a metal straw called a bombilla.

What matters isn’t the tea itself but the pause. Conversations slow down, phones disappear and people sit together for hours. If someone offers you mate, saying yes is one of the easiest ways to experience Argentine hospitality firsthand.

It’s usually accompanied by something small to snack on, like bizcochitos (savory biscuits), and once you get used to its bitterness is strangely addictive.

What to eat and drink

Argentina’s food culture is built around comfort, quality ingredients and long meals shared with other people.

Some essentials to try include:

  • Asado (parrillada)
Argentina’s legendary barbecue, especially cuts like ribeye or vacío cooked slowly over fire.

  • Empanadas
Regional styles vary, but Salteñas (meat and veg stew) and Tucumanas (steak and onions) are especially loved for their richness and juicy texture.

  • Choripán
A simple but perfect street-food sandwich made with grilled sausage and chimichurri.

  • Dulce de leche
The country’s favorite caramel spread, found in desserts, pastries and alfajores.

Local tip:

For a classic meal in Buenos Aires, my favourite restaurant is Don Julio, internationally famous for steak, but smaller neighborhood bodegónes (taverns) often give a more authentic experience.

In places like San Telmo, traditional restaurants such as El Federal serve generous portions, old-school atmosphere, that I deeply enjoyed, and the kind of meals locals grew up eating.

Staying safe during your travels in Argentina

Stay protected while you travel with Kaspersky

A trip should be about the journey ahead, not about worrying whether your phone, your accounts, or your personal data are safe along the way. But travel is exactly when your digital life can be exposed: you're booking things on the go, tapping links from unfamiliar senders, logging in to new apps, and connecting to whatever Wi-Fi you can find. Kaspersky helps you stay protected through all of it, so you can focus on where you're going.

It often starts before you even leave. As you book flights, hotels, and transport, Kaspersky Premium helps protect you from common travel scams, for example, fake booking links, misleading travel offers, and scam messages designed to catch you mid-plan. With Safe Messaging feature, it can flag suspicious links and messages before you tap, whether you're confirming a reservation, arranging a ride, paying online, or chatting on the go with a local guide.

With Kaspersky eSIM, you can get online as soon as you arrive without searching for a local SIM card or relying on unsecured public Wi-Fi. Whether you need to check directions, contact your accommodation, book a taxi or let your family know you've arrived safely, staying connected from the very beginning of your trip is simple and convenient.

Once you're on the move, the Wi-Fi at airports, hotels, cafés, and train stations becomes part of everyday travel, and that's where Kaspersky VPN comes in. By encrypting your internet traffic, it helps you use public networks more safely when you browse, check your plans, or access your accounts. It also helps you stay connected to the services you rely on at home — from banking and personal accounts to your favorite apps, websites, and streaming services — even while you're abroad.

And because travel means juggling more accounts than usual — airline apps, hotel sites, booking platforms, email, payment services — Kaspersky Password Manager keeps your credentials secure and within easy reach from your mobile device. It can create and manage strong passwords so you're not relying on weak or reused ones, and it lets you log in quickly wherever you are. You can also keep important travel documents (passport details, tickets, and booking confirmations) in a secure vault, so they're ready the moment you need them.

Together, these tools help protect your personal data across your devices and alert you to potential risks as you go, so the only thing you have to think about is the journey, not your digital safety.
