Kaspersky Lab Discovers Important Vulnerability in Popular Energy Equipment

While performing a security assessment for one of its clients in the critical infrastructure sector, the Kaspersky Lab Security Services team discovered an important vulnerability. The CVE-2016-4785 vulnerability could allow an attacker to remotely obtain a limited amount of device memory content from relay protection equipment. The vulnerability was reported to Siemens, the equipment vendor, and has already been patched.

Men Can’t Leave their Phones Alone, Experiment Shows

If you’re waiting for a friend, a colleague or even a doctor’s appointment, how long do you think it takes before you check your phone – two minutes? Three? An experiment conducted on behalf of Kaspersky Lab by the Universities of Würzburg and Nottingham-Trent found that participants left in a waiting room on their own lasted an average of just 44 seconds before touching their smartphones. Men couldn’t even manage half of this time, waiting an average of only 21 seconds compared to women at 57 seconds.

Kaspersky Lab and the Archeological Society at Athens extend cooperation in Akrotiri

Today Kaspersky Lab is announcing its latest step in its mission to save the world. Understanding the importance of preserving past cultures, for the benefit of future generations, Kaspersky Lab is continuing its cooperation with the Archeological Society at Athens (ASA) to further develop its Akrotiri project, and save the remains of the historic Cycladic/Minoan settlement. Kaspersky Lab is sponsoring a number of activities to help the scientists further their work, including the restoration of the excavations, the conservation of spectacular wall paintings and the project’s building conservation work.

Nearly a Quarter of Wi-Fi Networks Around Olympic Venues in Rio are Unsecure

In the lead-up to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Kaspersky Lab analysts and researchers mapped and assessed the security of the Wi-Fi networks visitors will encounter. More than 4,500 single unique access points were discovered in areas near Olympic Games venues. 18% of Wi-Fi networks tested were open - which means that the data sent and received through them is not encryption protected and can therefore be compromised.
