Statistics is a weird thing. While it is definitely a necessary tool for cybercrime-fighters, occasionally it reveals pretty unexpected figures and findings. Here\u2019s an example: According to a survey<\/a> carried out jointly by B2B International and Kaspersky Lab, 13% of Internet users do not believe cyberattacks are real.<\/p>\n

Err\u2026 what? Not real?<\/p>\n

How is it possible so many people are certain there are no cyberthreats in the world? Unfortunately, denial doesn\u2019t make people any safer from existing or upcoming threats.<\/p>\n

In a dream, turning your back to something scary occasionally helps, but that doesn\u2019t work in real life. Even while dreaming, waking up is a more effective way to get rid of a nightmare. Staying awake helps with countering real-world threats as well.<\/p>\n

Naysaying isn\u2019t limited to the denial of cyberthreats. Even people who accept that cyberthreats are real are not always convinced they need protection against them. Specifically, only 22% of respondents believe they can be targeted by cybercriminals. At the same time, a lot of people are aware of the threats, but don\u2019t really care.<\/p>\n

According to the survey, almost a third (32%) of users are not worried that their online accounts could be compromised and are oblivious to the risk. This applies not only to personal pages on social networking sites but to personal online banking accounts, which could hand over a user\u2019s finance information to a cybercriminal.<\/p>\n

42% of respondents are unaware of, or are not worried about, the possibility of losses from cyberattacks. 27% of respondents are aware that the public WiFi networks may be hijacked by criminals and used to intercept important data (such as payment credentials), but do not believe they need to worry about it. Additionally, 55% of respondents use public networks, 12% enter their credentials on websites, and 6% make online payments while connected to a public network \u2013 which is a definite security no-no<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the end, cyberthreats aren\u2019t a matter of \u201cbelieving\u201d, they are something that just exists in reality. A harsh reality, to be more specific \u2013 just ask the corporate admins who had to deal with Cryptolocker or some \u201cadvanced persistent threats.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ignoring these threats is negligent, but it is at least logically understandable. \u201cI\u2019m a humble person, my business is small<\/a>, who would want to attack me?\u201d \u2013 such thoughts had some merit a few years ago, but that doesn\u2019t work today.<\/p>\n

To deny that cyberthreats exist is similar to the attitude of the main antagonists in Ayn Rand\u2019s \u201cAtlas Shrugged\u201d. Those \u201cmystics of muscle\u201d, as John Galt named them, thought that \u201ceverything is faith\u201d and that the reality can be altered by a whim alone.<\/p>\n
