A number of manuscripts is said to be unearthed in the ruins of an ancient Olnerwick Abbey, presumably documenting the convent leaders\u2019 delicate affairs of the early 1400s. Olnerwicks were reportedly renowned for their crafty and efficient secrets keeping. The following short excerpt from their chronicles describes some of their ways, and although we\u2019re not sure how authentic this is, they look quite interesting and useful even today.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2018Hast thou finisht yet?\u2019 \u2013 brother Alfyrd askt petulantly.<\/p>\n

\u2018Bother him not lest he maketh no err\u2019, \u2013 the elder monke his henchman chided. And Brother Alfyrd fillt himself with humility, and fell silent. For a time.<\/p>\n

\u2018Hath I completed the first parte\u2019, Master of Codes sayd, after a while, \u2018Coded I thine message, and now shall I encrypt this over again\u2019.<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>

\u2018But why?\u2019 brother Alfyrd exclaim\u2019d, perplex\u2019d greatly.<\/p>\n

\u2018Shall that be of sense?\u2019 brother Olyver askt, feeling confused eyther.<\/p>\n

\u2018That shall be, indeed. A rumour there goeth, that the olde cyphere that we had used be-fore, is inutyle today\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018How is that?\u2019 brother Olyver inquired.<\/p>\n

\u2018I know not\u2019, Master of Codes answer\u2019d. \u2018They say Annyssay hast reacht for the knowledge of its keyes\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018And how cometh that Annyssay is in our affaires meddeleth?\u2019 brother Alfyrd askt in fright.<\/p>\n

\u2018Hush! No worde quoth thou further!\u2019 sayd brother Olyver. \u2018Do youre deed, Master of Codes, and we shall wait meekly, with no tongues bent.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018So be it\u2019, Master of Codes replyed and proceeded.\u00a0<\/p>

Hours pass\u2019d, and as the nightfall came both monkes strode at the edge of the wildernesse, to where the Abbote\u2019s messenger expected them.<\/p>\n

\u2018Tell me, brother Olyver, and if some one knowest the keye to both of the codes?\u2019 brother Alfyrd askt.<\/p>\n

\u2018No mortal soule knowest them both\u2019, brother Olyver replyed, \u2018And unless Evil One helpeth them, they shall not\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018Praise the Lord\u2019, brother Alfyrd mumbled. \u2018But did we not think Annyssay\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Silence, my brother. Speak thee not this name in vaine\u2019, brother Olyver frowned. \u2018Still, to soothe thine anxieties, know that even if any of our enemies copeth to find out how to unravel one code, and then the other one, a dire effort shall he require to read this message.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018And how is it so?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018They shall need wits to read Avicenna Authentica.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018In Arabic?\u2019 brother Alfyrd gaspt, amazed.<\/p>\n

\u2018That is true,\u2019 brother Olyver smil\u2019d. \u2018Our Right Reverend Father in God hast a scribe at his side, and, by the grace of Our Lord, he is the only one beside me who can educe Arabic language even under the Latin guise.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Thou shalt encrypt thine messages to conceal them from all of the prying eyes, so that only thine destinee may read it\u2019, brother Olyver added.<\/p>\n

A messenger emerged from the greene and kneel\u2019d. Deaf and mute, he only required just one gesture to ride away carrying the secret letter to the head of Monastery, in which brother Olyver reported on the impending menace gathering in deepest shadowes.<\/p>\n

This is a short excerpt from what is said to be unearthed medieval manuscript, describing a way of keeping secrets.
