But now we\u2019re seeing several launches a month, their carbon dioxide (CO2) output is adding up.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish space company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyrora.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Skyrora<\/a> thinks it\u2019s found an answer: A high-grade fuel manufactured from petrochemicals sourced from previously unrecyclable plastics. They believe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecosene.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Ecosene<\/a>, a fuel similar to kerosene, could disrupt the fossil fuel economy.<\/p>\n<p>Recycling plastics isn\u2019t the solution many of us imagine as we dutifully rinse our milk and shampoo bottles. A paper published in Science Advances estimates <a href=\"https:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/3\/7\/e1700782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">we\u2019re recycling less than nine percent of plastic at the end of its life<\/a>, and encouraging more recycling can\u2019t address the <a href=\"https:\/\/sciencenorway.no\/forskningno-norway-plastic\/why-is-so-little-plastic-actually-recycled\/1457439\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reasons for the low rate of plastic recycling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, a paper in the journal Science estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iswa.org\/fileadmin\/user_upload\/Calendar_2011_03_AMERICANA\/Science-2015-Jambeck-768-71__2_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">up to eight million tons of plastic enter the oceans each year<\/a>. The Ocean Conservancy calculates <a href=\"https:\/\/oceanconservancy.org\/trash-free-seas\/plastics-in-the-ocean\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">seas will contain 250 million tons of plastic by 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<div class=\"c-promo-product\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<article class=\"c-card c-card--link c-card--medium@sm c-card--aside-hor@lg\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-card__body  \">\n\t\t\t\t\t<header class=\"c-card__header\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"c-card__headline\">Kaspersky's helping clean up space<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"c-card__title \"><span>Securing Space<\/span><\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/header>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-card__desc \">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Junk in space, like broken satellites, is a dangerous problem. Now Kaspersky\u2019s working on a space clean-up.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-card__aside\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/securingspace.com\/\" class=\"c-button c-card__link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">About project<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/article>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n<h2>A proven eco-fuel<\/h2>\n<p>I spoke to Derek Harris, Business Operations Manager at Skyrora. \u201cWe need a way to extend the life cycle of plastics \u2013 one that doesn\u2019t include burying or burning them,\u201d Harris explains. \u201cWe developed the first batch of Ecosene at a small test facility in Slovakia, turning about a ton of unrecyclable plastic into about 600kg of high-performance fuel for rockets or commercial jet aircraft.\u201d That\u2019s enough for an efficient jet to fly over 24,000 passenger kilometers \u2013 further than London Heathrow to Auckland, New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"640\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FRsyC8aGJfE?version=3&amp;rel=1&amp;fs=1&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;wmode=transparent\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Skyrora\u2019s aspiration to extend Ecosene\u2019s use from space rockets to commercial jets could multiply its value as a much-needed way for aviation to counter-balance carbon emissions with a different kind of contribution to saving the planet.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To further reduce aviation\u2019s footprint, Skyrora hopes to make a transportable system called a \u2018skid\u2019 that allows processing materials to make Ecosene at airports. Making the eco fuel at its site of use would cut another environmental cost of aviation: Transporting fuel from where it\u2019s made to where it\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n<h2>Manufacturing innovation meets recycling breakthrough<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe use plastics like polystyrene, polyester and polypropylene that are usually unrecyclable when clean,\u201d Harris clarifies. \u201cEcosene\u2019s production process means we can even use unclean waste plastics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mixed plastics, some harder to recycle than others, and unclean plastics, are barriers to effective plastic disposal and recycling, which has motivated some countries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/environment\/article\/should-we-burn-plastic-waste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">burn plastic waste, releasing pollutants into the air<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Being able to use unclean plastics stands this eco-fuel apart as a recycling option. The fuel\u2019s developers have produced plans for marine vehicles that would collect plastic waste from oceans and perform the first step in the Ecosene manufacturing process onboard. The vessels would then transport the waste to nearby facilities for the next steps to convert the plastics to eco-fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturing petrochemical fuel can produce damaging waste, which Ecosene also addresses. \u201cProcesses similar to Ecosene production release harmful gases, but we use these for heating, recycling some of the waste within the manufacturing process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ecosene also contains less sulfur than the form of kerosene rockets use (RP-1 kerosene.) As an atmospheric pollutant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.epa.gov\/acidrain\/education\/site_students\/whyharmful.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">sulfur causes respiratory disease, acid rain and tree and crop damage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The thinking among Ecosene\u2019s inventors is that reducing environmental impact in the space launch and aviation industries is about willingness to invest rather than technological infeasibility. The technologies exist \u2013 companies and investors need to embrace them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Others have tried to recycle petrochemical plastics into usable fuels before, often failing because it\u2019s hard to extract excess the paraffin waxes manufacture generates. Skyrora\u2019s breakthrough was a low-temperature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/catalytic-pyrolysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">catalytic pyrolysis process<\/a> that separates the paraffin waxes, leaving an effective eco-fuel.<\/p>\n<h2>Too good to be true?<\/h2>\n<p>Ecosene boasts more commercial competitiveness and environmental effectiveness than fuels from other energy companies. Having followed Ecosene\u2019s journey from inception to testing to launch, I had to ask Harris if it was all too good to be true.<\/p>\n<p>He told me, \u201cBefore I agreed to take over the Ecosene project from Skyrora, I wanted to see the process working and tested. 21 tests later, including an upper-stage rocket engine for low-earth orbital missions and support, we found Ecosene was one to three percent better than kerosene in energy characteristics. Their claims stood up to scrutiny, and there were signs we could further improve the formula.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris continued, \u201cThat said, I wouldn\u2019t claim it\u2019s the ultimate solution to the plastic waste crisis. We must address the climate crisis at source, but in the meantime, we\u2019ve found a strategy to address one of its many symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With hydrogen and biofuels on the rise, Ecosene will see its share of competitors. While reliable and designed to address plastics mitigation at its core, Ecosene is still a CO2-producing fuel that can\u2019t contribute to carbon neutrality targets. But hydrogen fuels and engines struggle to produce the power needed for flight: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-54242176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Airbus says their commercial hydrogen jets would be ready to fly around 2035<\/a>. In the meantime, in rockets and jets, Ecosene makes a compelling replacement for traditional kerosene.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With carbon dioxide-heavy launches increasing, the space industry needs to improve on its environmental impact.
