For many, working from home was mandated overnight. Others were sent home on paid leave. Spending slowed drastically. It even disrupted the disruptors: <u><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2020\/06\/03\/monzo-lay-offs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Monzo<\/a><\/u>, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/may\/02\/deliveroo-venture-capitalism-food-delivery-business-model\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Deliveroo<\/a><\/u> and <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2019\/nov\/21\/we-work-job-losses-layoffs-global-adam-neumann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WeWork<\/a><\/u> announced devastating job cuts.<\/p>\n<p>It also sparked a time of self-reflection. Environmental impact came into sharp focus, and a conversation about work-life balance erupted.<\/p>\n<p>According to leading market intelligence agency Mintel, its consumer and social media trends expert Gabrielle Lieberman says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mintel.com\/blog\/new-market-trends\/how-covid-19-brought-the-future-forward-part-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">coronavirus didn\u2019t create behavior shifts. It accelerated them.<\/a> Global trends in wellbeing, identity and experiences slated for 2030 are on a fast track to being adopted sharpish.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses can\u2019t slow down. They must grab the opportunity to create a \u2018new normal\u2019 that works for them.<\/p>\n<h2>There\u2019s no place like home unless it\u2019s for months on end<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>When working from home started en masse overnight, we relished the novelty of no commute, being moments from the pantry and avoiding boring watercooler stories.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Flexible working seemed \u2018solved\u2019 as tech giants like <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/music\/news\/spotify-employees-work-from-home-1234613095\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Spotify<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-52570714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Facebook and Google<\/a> implemented longer-term work-from-home policies. Job done, right?<\/p>\n<p>Not so fast. It wasn\u2019t long before Zoom calls got old, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2020\/jul\/14\/end-of-the-office-the-quiet-grinding-loneliness-of-working-from-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">loneliness took hold and employees started to fear taking a break under the eye of productivity monitoring<\/a>. Parents faced a crisis as their home and work life collided.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/knowledge\/fundamentals\/relations\/flexible-working\/factsheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Flexible working has proven benefits<\/a>. It means different things to different people. They want more autonomy and want to split their time between the office and remote work. Senior managers agreed flexible working has benefits but stressed the importance of face-to-face meetings. Where those face-to-faces aren\u2019t possible, collaborative tools like Slack and Microsoft Teams can build positive vibes with dedicated channels for humor and memes as well as work-related chat.<\/p>\n<h2>Workplace design can make us healthier<\/h2>\n<p>To help companies prepare their workspaces for life with COVID-19, the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellcertified.com\/health-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WELL health-safety rating<\/a>. It\u2019s\u00a0an \u201cevidence-based, third-party verified rating\u201d for new and existing buildings and spaces focused on \u201coperational policies, maintenance protocols, emergency plans and stakeholder engagement strategies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But can businesses go further with their office spaces and use them to improve employee health and wellbeing? IWBI also works with companies to help them meet the\u00a0<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellcertified.com\/certification\/v2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">WELL Building Standard<\/a><\/u>. This rating system recognizes that buildings, and everything in them, can enhance people\u2019s health and wellbeing. It encourages organizations to pay more attention to things like light, nourishment and <a href=\"https:\/\/biofilico.com\/news\/air-purifying-plants-healthy-biophilic-interiors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">biophilic design: Interior planting with species that improve indoor air quality and filter pollutants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.co.uk\/knowledge\/fundamentals\/relations\/flexible-working\/factsheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">flexibility benefits both business and employees<\/a>, remember flexible office space can liberate the budget. For example, having a more compact office with hot desks, workshop spaces and meeting rooms can reduce costs.<\/p>\n<h2>Retain more people by building leaders\u2019 emotional intelligence<\/h2>\n<p>To help teams cope with change, World Economic Forum research shows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/07\/staff-demand-flexible-working-after-covid-19-adecco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">empathetic, supportive team leaders are more important than ever<\/a>. And we\u2019re not there yet \u2013 more than half of managers need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/secure-futures-magazine\/homeworking-mental-health\/34941\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">training in skills to support employee mental health<\/a>. And it might just turn out to be a staff retention boon: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/employees-dont-leave-companies-managers-brigette-hyacinth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Employees don\u2019t leave companies, they leave managers.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Joti Samra, R.Psych, founder of\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.myworkplacehealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">MyWorkplaceHealth<\/a><\/u>, a consultancy helping businesses make their workplace more psychologically healthy, puts communication at the center of the empathy and support team leaders can give. She says, \u201cHave one-to-ones with direct reports more often to understand their stress points. It may be money, children or caring for an elderly relative. Adapt expectations to each person\u2019s needs. I\u2019m asking my managers to have more contact to find out who\u2019s OK and who\u2019s struggling, so we can give them early support.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The flex appeal of freelancers<\/h2>\n<p>Tapping into the global freelance market can be a cost-efficient way to scale up or down, reacting to the market quickly. Steve Folland, host of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beingfreelance.com\/the-best-freelance-podcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Being Freelance podcast<\/a>, has seen his community grow in numbers and strength.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can use freelancers when you need them. They\u2019re experienced, motivated people who can get the job done remotely. Once you\u2019re happy with having team members working outside your organization, it removes geographical boundaries to talent. It makes great business sense.<\/p>\n<cite><p>Steve Folland, Being Freelance network and podcast<\/p><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the best ways to work with freelance talent, Folland recommends, \u201cGive clear briefs, realistic deadlines and listen to their advice. When it\u2019s all done, pay promptly. Bring freelancers on with as much notice as possible. You\u2019ll get the best results that way. As with all relationships, communication is key.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Owning the Zoom<\/h2>\n<p>Knowing your way around video chat software has proven essential if you accidentally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/weird-news\/boss-accidentally-turns-herself-potato-21788027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">turn yourself into a potato<\/a>. Employees thrown into the deep end during the COVID-19 pandemic with software like Slack, Trello and Asana are keen to keep developing their knowledge. Invest in learning and development, including when it\u2019s best not to Zoom and when to take a digital detox, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2020\/07\/staff-demand-flexible-working-after-covid-19-adecco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">helps retain\u00a0talent and make\u00a0your business more resilient<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Remote working is a big change in the way people work and caries serious cybersecurity risks. To keep data secure, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/secure-futures-magazine\/cybersecurity-training-homeworkers\/34942\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">train freelancers and staff working remotely to be cybersafe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>People, planet, profit<\/h2>\n<p>Overnight changes in reaction to COVID-19 gave many of us time to reflect on our environmental impact. While the pandemic initially presented us with clearer skies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/world-europe-51943104\/coronavirus-venice-canals-clearer-after-lockdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cleaner waterways<\/a>, the focus on hygiene has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/coronavirus-plastic-pollution-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">derailed the war on single-use plastic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses shouldn\u2019t wait to use their corporate influence for environmental change. As well as looking at processes across your company, including the services and products you buy and organizations and non-profits you partner with, look at how you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/secure-futures-magazine\/going-green-it\/34209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">reduce your company\u2019s IT carbon footprint<\/a>. The UN Global Compact also has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unglobalcompact.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">frameworks, resources and guidance on how to improve your business practices for a better future<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst uncertainty, it\u2019s natural to feel conservative and cautious. But for visionaries, it\u2019s time to rip up the rulebook and embrace the opportunity to create a new normal that works for your business.
