Over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.com\/blog\/secure-futures-magazine\/space-technologies-history\/34731\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">60 years of space exploration<\/a> have given us <a href=\"https:\/\/orbitaldebris.jsc.nasa.gov\/faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">more than 500,000 pieces of space junk<\/a> orbiting Earth. And those are just the ones we know about.<\/p>\n<p>From a fingernail-sized section of paint to whole spaceships and satellites, these objects are a major risk to space safety. Collisions can damage expensive equipment and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_debris#On_Earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">endanger the lives of both astronauts on missions and people on Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We need to clean up to keep exploring space safely. Thankfully, action is hotting up. In 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Safety_Security\/Clean_Space\/ESA_commissions_world_s_first_space_debris_removal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">European Space Agency awarded the first contract to clean up space debris<\/a><u>.<\/u> In 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-commits-new-funding-to-combat-space-debris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">UK Space Agency launched a 1 million UK pound fund for solutions to space junk monitoring challenges<\/a>. And in June 2020, Kaspersky announced its support for <a href=\"https:\/\/startrocket.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">StartRocket<\/a>, a start-up with an ambitious new technology that could be the future of retrieving space debris. I\u2019m speaking with StartRocket\u2019s founder Vlad Sitnikov to learn more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Suraya: Hi, Vlad. Tell us a bit about your background.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vlad: I managed my own design studio early in my career and became an agency partner in 2004. I later founded the creative agency, the Hungry Boys, specializing in communication strategies for emerging technologies.<\/p>\n<p>I founded StartRocket in 2018. I\u2019m responsible for design thinking and developing new company services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What got you interested in working on the problem of space junk?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am inspired by a future in which people can travel freely into space, explore new planets and live on them. I\u2019m dreaming of spending my twilight years on Mars. But now we have a huge problem \u2013 half a million human-made \u201cthings\u201d orbiting our planet. These objects are a collision risk for satellites and spacecraft. And if we don\u2019t solve the problem of space junk, we run the risk of being restricted to planet Earth by it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve developed a technology that could help. How does it work? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>StartRocket\u2019s solution for space debris is called the Foam Debris Catcher. It\u2019s a series of small, autonomous satellites that catch space junk and take it out of orbit using sticky polymer foam.<\/p>\n<p>The foam traps orbiting debris, then drags it toward Earth, causing the objects to incinerate in the planet\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Startrocket Foam Debris Catcher Manifesto\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/427308307?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the foam\u2019s advantages over other space junk removal ideas, like harpoons and nets?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Space junk is a risk to human life. It can do costly damage and comes in a huge range of sizes. That\u2019s why we wanted to design an inexpensive solution that could work on any scale.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Compared with many other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/to-clean-up-space-junk-some-people-grabbed-a-net-and-harpoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recent ideas for removing space junk<\/a>, it\u2019s much cheaper. We\u2019re using affordable, cutting-edge technology all the way, including our mathematical modeling and the way we launch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where are you in the development process? Is it ready for testing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our chemists are researching the best formula for the foam. It must be able to complete the task while in near-Earth space, automatically attaching to pieces of space debris.<br>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-36220\" src=\"https:\/\/media.kasperskydaily.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/92\/2020\/07\/03090802\/200630-kaspersky-m200-startrocket-inline-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"space debris start rocket\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\"><br>\nWe\u2019re working on a series of experiments to prove the foam\u2019s potential on Earth and in space. We\u2019ve planned the first test in orbit for 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could the foam get loose and become space junk in its own right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s part of what we\u2019re working on. We want to create a chemical formula for the foam that can withstand a collision with a space object. We\u2019ve also looked at the possibility of the foam breaking satellites and other spacecraft during a collision. Although chances of it happening are low, we use calculations of the safest orbital direction to prevent it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If the foam works, could it feasibly clean up all space junk?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We could selectively apply alternative foam formulas to catch the most dangerous objects. Cleaning up all space junk may not be necessary or desirable. In future, we may be able to re-use the debris as a raw material to build bases or as fuel for interstellar flights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have you thought of other potential uses for the foam on Earth or in space?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Foam may be the most common phenomenon that accompanies life. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Micelle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Life may have first arisen through foam<\/a>. Our bones are foam. It\u2019s hard to quantify potential uses.<\/p>\n<p>We won\u2019t know until we\u2019ve done further work on the formula and tested it, but we\u2019re considering the potential of the foam to quickly build large things in space without hi-tech robots or other mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>On Mars, for example, the atmosphere facilitates foaming. We dream our CubeSat (minisatellite) will be the first to form a foam hemisphere: A prototype for future Martian cities.<\/p>\n<p>The foam could figuratively return to Earth from Mars in the form of affordable technologies, such as beautiful, comfortable housing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your business StartRocket earlier planned to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theorbitaldisplay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><strong>sell advertising in the night sky<\/strong><\/a><strong>. How do these projects connect for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2018 we planned to launch The Orbital Display, placing advertising in the night sky. We put it on hold because many people hated the idea. They wanted something different.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re now well into your start-up journey \u2013 congratulations! What\u2019s your advice for a successful start-up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t hesitate and don\u2019t be afraid.
