A special component is included in Kaspersky Anti-Virus version 6.0 to protect files on your computer from infection, File Anti-Virus. File Anti-Virus protects files that you are using on one of the following security levels
High – the level with the most comprehensive monitoring of files opened, saved, or run. The following parameters are predefined for this level:
- Scan all files
- Scan all archives
- Scan all installation packages
- Scan only new embedded OLE objects
- Scan mode - smart
Recommended. Kaspersky Lab recommends this settings level. It will scan the following object categories:
- Scan programs and documents (by content)
- Scan new and changed files only
- Scan embedded OLE objects
- Do not process archives larger than 8 MB
- Scan mode - smart
Low – level with settings that let you comfortably use applications that require significant system resources, since the scope of files scanned is reduced. It will scan the following object categories:
- Scan programs and documents by extension
- Scan new and changed files only
- Do not process archives larger than 8 MB
- Scan mode -smart
Custom. If none of the file security levels listed meet your needs, you can customize the protection settings. To do so, select the level that is closest to what you need as a starting point and edit its settings. In such a case, the level will be set at Custom.
To navigate to the settings menu in the Settings window in the Security level section click the Customize button.
The following settings can be changed for the three pre-set security levels:
The General tab
- Scan all files - this option scans all objects without exception
- Scan programs and documents (by contents) – this option scans only potentially infected files – files which viruses can intrude. Before searching for viruses in an object, its internal header is analyzed for the file format (txt, doc, exe, etc.).
- Scan programs and documents (by extension) – this option scans only potentially infected files, and in doing so, the file format will be determined by extension. Click the link, to review a list of file extensions that are scanned with this option
- Scan new and changed files only. In this case the program scans a new file only once. If the file has not been modified from the previous scan it will not be scanned.
- Scan All/Only new archives – scan .rar, .arj, .zip, .cab, .lha, .jar, and .ice archives.
- Scan All/Only new installation packages – scans for viruses self-extracting archives
- Scan All/Only new embedded OLE objects– scan objects embedded in files (for example, Excel spreadsheets or a macros).
- Extract archives in background if larger than – if the size of a compound object exceeds the restricted limit, it will be scanned by a program as one object (the header will be analyzed) and then will be given to the user to work with. Objects which belong to the archive will be scanned later. If the option is not checked, access to files which exceed the restricted size is blocked till all objects are scanned.
- Do not process archives larger than – file that exceeds the restricted size will skip anti-virus scan.

On the tab you can add, edit or delete the protection scope for the File Anti-Virus component. By default in the real-time protection mode all files on hard, removable and network drives are scanned.
The Additional tab

On the tab the scan mode of File Anti-Virus component can be changed:
- Smart mode - This mode is aimed at speeding up file processing and return them to the user. When it is selected, a decision to scan is made based on analyzing the operations performed with the file. For example, when using a Microsoft Office file, Kaspersky Anti-Virus scans the file when it is first opened and last closed. All operations in between that overwrite the file are not scanned.
- On access or modification – File Anti-Virus scans files as they are opened or edited.
- On access – only scans files when an attempt is made to open them.
- On execution – only scans files when an attempt is made to run them.
A schedule to pause work of the File Anti-Virus component can be set on the tab:
- On schedule – pauses or resumes the File Anti-Virus component. Click the Schedule button to set the pause and resume time of the File Anti-Virus component.
