Concerning to:
  • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations MP5 (builds 5.0.676 - 5.0.712)
  • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations MP4 (builds 5.0.527 - 5.0.528)
  • Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations has two mechanisms to store the original copies of infected or possibly infected files: Backup and Quarantine.

Backup storage is a special storage area used to store backup copies of infected objects. Backup copies are created when an object is attempted to be disinfected or deleted for the first time. The major function of the backup storage is to keep these copies so that the initial object can be restored at any moment ( detailed information about working with quarantined objects)

Quarantine is a special secure storage area where possibly infected objects are placed. A heuristic code analyzer, detecting up to 92% of new viruses, determines whether a file is suspicious in terms of possible presence of a virus. This mechanism is very effective but sometimes gives false positives. During the scan of the entire computer or individual disks files and in real-time protection mode, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations quarantines all suspicious objects. Various actions (scan, recover, delete, etc.) can later be applied to the quarantined objects. Quarantined files are stored using a special format and do not constitute any danger to your computer. You are advised to update the anti-virus database before scanning quarantined files. The update may contain information about any viruses which have infected the quarantined files, and you may be able to repair the files (detailed information about working with backuped objects).

You can customize the settings of the quarantine and the backup. To configure the settings, do the following:

  • Go to Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations > Settings > Configure Quarantine and Backup
  • In the open window you can adjust quarantine and backup parameters

You can edit the following parameters in the main application window:

    The Quarantine tab

    General quarantine settings

  • Delete objects stored longer than ... days: by default, the storage time of quarantined files is not limited. You can limit this period by checking the corresponding box and specifying the number of days in the corresponding spin-button box (the default value is 90 days).

  • Quarantine maximum size ... MB: by default, the quarantine size is not limited (the option is not checked). If you wish to restrict the total size of the quarantined files, check the corresponding box and specify the size using the up and down arrows of the corresponding spin-button box (the default value is 100 MB). If the quarantine size is exceeded, the action you select in the Action if the size limit is exceeded section will be applied.

  • Action if the size limit is exceeded: if the Quarantine size is exceeded either of two action is applied
    • Notify user: if the Quarantine size is exceeded a corresponding message is displayed on the screen
    •  Remove oldest objects: if the Quarantine size is exceeded one or several quarantined oldest objects will be deleted to prevent from exceeding

  • Automatically scan quarantined objects every time the anti-virus database is updated: this mode provides for an automatic scan of the quarantined objects each time the anti-virus database gets updated.

Note: Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations will not be able to scan quarantined objects immediately after you updated your anti-virus database if you were working with the quarantine at the time of update (the quarantine window will be open).

    Objects restoring settings

When restoring the quarantined objects one of two restore ways is possible:

  • Restore to the original location: the object will be restored to the same location (disc/folder) where Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations detected it.

  • Restore to folder: the object will be restored by Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations to the folder you specify in the field
