False messages from Messenger service

Kaspersky Lab has recently seen an increase of spam-messages delivered via the system service Windows “Messenger”. This kind of spam is delivered to the computer using the Messenger delivery method and looks like an ordinary popup window:

The message in the popup normally says that a lot of Spyware programs have been detected and it is strongly recommended that the user enters a site and to download some antispy utility. In reality the programs downloaded from such sites are Trojans, or simply imitate the job of an antispyware program yet fail to detect or erase any Adware/Spyware programs

The authors of such malicious programs are actively using Spyware to further their own interest.

Kaspersky Lab recommends that users ignore such pop up messages and do not click on offered links. To prevent your computer from receiving this spam, users can switch off the Messenger service. You need to do the following:

  • Go To Start->Control Panel
  • Click on Administrative Tools
  • Click on Services
  • Find Messenger in the list
  • Double click on the Messenger in the list and under “Startup type” change it to “Disabled”
