Concerning to Kaspersky Administration Kit 6.0 MP1

Backup copying allows saving all data about the logical network and its work, relocate Administration Server from one computer to another without any data loss, and also restore the data when updating to a later version of Kaspersky Administration Kit.

The following objects are backed up:

  • Administration Server database that stores policies, tasks, application settings, and events logged on the Administration Server;
  • Information about the logical networks and client configurations;
  • Installation files for remote installation of the applications (contents of the Packages folder);
  •  Administration Server certificate.

Administration Server database can be backed up either automatically, using the create backup of Administration Server task, or manually using the klbackup utility from the Kaspersky Administration Kit distributive.

InformationDuring the backing up the Administration Server is inaccessible. The back up procedure might take about 10-15 minutes. After it you can connect the Console to the Administration Server (connection is not restored automatically).

The only way to restore the data from backup is to use the klbackup utility.

How to backup the data using the klbackup utility

After the Administration Server is installed, the klbackup utility is saved in the installation folder (Program Files\Kaspersky Lab\Kaspersky Administration Kit). Running the utility from the command prompt you can either backup or restore the data from backup depending on the keys used.

Utility syntax to copy the data:

klbackup [-logfile LOGFILE] -path BACKUP_PATH [-use_ts] -password PASSWORD

Key description:

  •  -logfile LOGFILE – Save report about backing up the Administration Server database.

  •  -path BACKUP_PATH – Save information in the BACKUP_PATH folder (mandatory parameter). Both Administration Server and SQL-server on which Administration server database is located should be able to write into the defined folder.

The account of the server database and the klbackup utility should have the rights to modify the BACKUP_PATH folder.

  •  -use_ts – Data are saved to a folder named klbackup YYYY-MM-DD # HH-MM-SS in the BACKUP_PATH folder (name of the folder is the current date and time).

If the key is not defined, information is saved in the root of the BACKUP_PATH directory. If you try to save information to a folder that already contains a backup copy, the application will display an error message and information will not be updated.

The -use_ts key allows you to archive data related to the Administration Server. For example, if the –path key was set to C:\KLBackups, the klbackup 2006-06-19 # 11-30-18 folder will contain information about the Administration Server status on June 19, 2006 at 11:30 AM, 18 sec.

  •  -password PASSWORD – save the Administration Server certificate and use a password defined by the PASSWORD parameter to encrypt/ decrypt the certificate (mandatory parameter)

Information A password which consists of several words should be taken into inverted commas.

WarningDo not forget your password; if the password is given incorrectly or not given at all when restoring the data, the certificate will not be restored.

To backup the Administration Server database, run the klbackup utility with the necessary set of keys from the command prompt on the computer in which the Administration Server is installed.

Example: it is necessary to create a backup copy of the Administration Server data in the E:\Backup folder, save backup in the subfolder with the current date and the time, log the report file of the process and save the Server certificate with the 12345 password. The command line is the following then:

klbackup -logfile E:\Backup\log.txt -path E:\Backup -use_ts -password 12345

How to backup the database using the backup of Administration Server task

To create the task, in the Console tree select the Global tasks node > open its context menu > select New >Task.

InformationThis task can only be created once.

The New task wizard is started, define the task name and:

  • As the application which performs the task select Kaspersky Administration Kit; as task type select – Create backup of Administration Server

  • When configuring backup settings:

o Specify the

    • backup folder to save the backed up data; it must have write access rights for Administration Server and SQL-server, on which the Administration Server database is stored.

The backup copy of the database is created to the specified backup folder as a subfolder with the creation date and time as the name in the format klbackup YYYY-MM-DD # HH-MM-SS

    • Enter the password which will be used to encrypt/decrypt the Administration Server certificate.

    • To limit the number of saved backup copies (the maximum number of subfolders which concurrently reside in a backup storage), check Limit number of backup copies saved and define the necessary value.

If the number of backup copies reaches the restricted parameter, the oldest backup copy is deleted.

    • Define the account to run the task

    • Configure the task schedule

Once the task is created, you can change the above mentioned settings.
