In the article you can find a typical scheme how to install Kaspersky Administration Kit – the succession of actions. Depending on the state of the network the administrator can change the scheme.

1. How to design the logical network.

On this step you should decide: 

• What computers on your local network will function as an Administration Servers, administrator workstations, and client computers?

Client computers are the computers on which Kaspersky Lab applications are going to be installed. And from workstations the administrator will manage the logical network remotely via the Administration Console. 

• How to install Administration Agent on client computers: 
• remotely 
• using product deployment task 
• using MSi-installer 
• via Group Policy (Activate Directory) 
• locally 
• cloning computer hard disks with the installed Administration Agent version 6.0.XXXX 
• How will anti-virus applications for Windows workstations/ file servers be installed on the client computers: 
• remotely 
• using product deployment task 
• via Group Policy (Active Directory) 
• locally

The following applications can be installed remotely: 

 

• Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations 
• Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Workstations 
• Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 SOS
• Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows File Servers 
• Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 for Windows Servers 
• What software will be used to create the Administration Server database - Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL or MSDE? Is it already installed or should it be installed? If installed, does meet system requirements? 

In order to create the database for Kaspersky Administration Kit, Kaspersky Lab’s experts recommend downloading and installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

• By what feature will client computers be organized in groups, define the hierarchy of groups and the hierarchy of servers (if necessary). 

• Will Update Agents be deployed in the logical network?

2. Installing and configuring Kaspersky Administration Kit program components, including:

• Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and MSDE 2000, from the Kaspersky Administration Kit complex (if necessary). 

• Administration Server on all computers that will perform this function: locally or remotely in silent-mode.

Configure its parameters (in the Administration Server properties) 

• store information about events in the Administration Server work; 
• enable the mode to detect virus activity; 
• scan network settings 
• Administration Console - on a networked computer from which the administrator will manage Kaspersky Lab applications.

If you are going to manage an anti-virus application via the Administration Console installed locally, then Administration Agent should also be installed on the same computer (to provide connection of the anti-virus and the Console)

3. Forming the logical network structure using the Quick Start Wizard. The wizard helps you to 

• create hierarchies of the administration groups; 

• add client computers to groups; 

• configure parameters of notifications about the events in the complex work centralized 

• create policies and some tasks of the upper level for Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations versions 5.0 and 6.0; 

• create the update task of the updates' storage on the Administration Server.

If you are not using the Quick Start Wizard, then you should make all the mentioned actions manually.

How to install Administration Agent in the network without the domain structure

If client computers are located in the remote office then the recommendations how to install the Administration Agent on them vary depending if the VPN-channel is used or not.

To manage Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.6 for ISA Server Enterprise Edition remotely an Administration Agent of the version 5.0.0474 should be installed on the server. You can get more detailed information about it here.

The sequence what should be installed first: the Agent or the Antivirus is significant only when the anti-virus is installed remotely using the Administration Agent.

Due to detected incompatibility of the Administration Agent version 6.0.1427 (and above) with the following applications:

• Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.0 for Windows Workstations
• Kaspersky Anti-Virus SOS 5.0 
• Kaspersky Security 5.5 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
• Kaspersky Anti-Virus 5.5 for Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003

in order to manage these applications remotely, it is recommended to install Administration Agent version 6.0.1405 (which is not the latest version) on the protected computers.

6. Define Update Agents (if necessary).

7. Create necessary policies and tasks to provide anti-virus protection of the logical network.

8. Configure update of the anti-virus database and application modules on client computers. 

9. Organize monitoring over the state of the anti-virus protection of the logical network.

10. Configure regular backup of the Administration Server database.
