What You Should Know About the "Here You Have" Worm

In the past 24 hours, Kaspersky Lab – and many other security companies – began tracking an email worm called VBMania. It spreads via email, just like traditional email attacks from the past 10 years.  Here’s what you should be on the lookout for:

The worm spreads by sending emails from an infected computer. The messages have a subject line of "Here you have" and random text such as "This is The Free Download Sex Movies, you can find it Here," along with a link to the Internet. If you click on the link to open the file…your machine will be exposed to the worm, and if you’re not using up-to-date security software, you could be infected. (See the example image below)

The good news: Kaspersky Lab’s security products WILL protect you against this worm.

You may have seen some headlines discussing the rapid spread of this relatively primitive attack. The fact that this worm has spread quickly across the U.S. shows a lot of people are forgetting some basic guidelines of email security, which are built around common sense. As a rule…if you receive an unexpected/unsolicited email containing an attachment or a link…don’t open the contents of the message! Even if the message comes from someone you know, take a second and ask the sender to confirm the message. And obviously, any email that contains bad grammar or irregular spelling should be a red-flag.
