Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of Internet threat management solutions that protect against all forms of malicious software including viruses, spyware, hackers and spam, has revealed the Trojan variants dominated the IT threat landscape and digital pollution of the Internet in January 2010.

David Emm is a member of the GREAT team at Kaspersky Lab and he explains: "Today, one of the biggest and most popular tools in the arsenal of the cybercriminal is the Trojan, increasingly favoured for its stealth-like properties. These programs account for 91% of all known threats on the Internet."

In addition to the dominance of Trojan programs the Top Twenty reports that the now infamous Kido worm (also known as Conficker) remains prominent, with variants holding the top two positions for consecutive months. Emm warns: "Trojans are often wrongly perceived as being less dangerous than viruses, or worms such as Kido as they are not parasitic and don't spread by themselves - yet their impact can be dangerous and very far-reaching. Not only have they dramatically increased in numbers in recent years, they have also become more sophisticated."

Top Twenty ranking for January 2010 - Malicious programs, adware and potentially unwanted programs that were detected and neutralised when accessed for the first time, i.e. by the on-access scanner.
