Kaspersky Lab Int. and Talanto Technologies join forces to fight e-mail aware viruses

Cambridge, UK, December 18, 2000 - Kaspersky Lab Int., an international data-security software-development company, and Talanto Technologies, a leading Russian Internet-service provider, have announced an alliance to provide users of the popular free e-mail service server, CMAIL.RU, with free real-time virus protection for e-mail correspondence.

The virus protection system is based on Kaspersky® Anti-Virus (AVP) for Sendmail gateways running on the Linux operating system. It provides users with automatic real-time virus checking for all incoming and outgoing messages and attached files. Kaspersky® Anti-Virus (AVP) protects against all types of malicious code, including computer viruses, Internet worms and Trojan horses. When a virus attack is discovered, the program warns both the sender and recipient of the infected message by sending out an e-mail notification containing details about the virus name and location.

Kaspersky® Anti-Virus (AVP) performs anti-virus scanning immediately after the CMAIL.RU server receives an e-mail message or at the moment a user tries to attach a file to the message being composed. This eliminates the chance of sending or running an infected file while casually forgetting to check it for viruses.

Kaspersky® Anti-Virus (AVP) is also powered by a feature that enables scanning in nested messages, embedded OLE objects and even inside archived and compressed files of any nesting level; i.e., those that have been archived several times using different archive utilities. Even if a virus is hidden in a ZIP archive placed in an ARJ archive and then into an RAR archive, Kaspersky® Anti-Virus (AVP) still neutralises it. Thanks to the unique, second generation heuristic code analyser integrated into Kaspersky® Anti-Virus (AVP), CMAIL.RU users are protected against even unknown viruses that could be discovered. The program provides a 92%-detection-rate of unknown viruses, proving to be one of the best in the world.

"We are happy to work with Talanto Technologies and highly regard the company's commitment to providing users with secured personal e-mail services," said Denis Zenkin, Head of Corporate Communications for Kaspersky Lab. "About 85% of all virus incidents reported to Kaspersky Lab this year have occurred via e-mail. This fact makes personal and corporate e-mail virus protection the overall core computer-security element."

"The current trend in user preference shows that more and more of both corporate and home users are discarding the use of common locally-based e-mail programs, and are switching to Web-based e-mail solutions," said Andrew Matveev, Head of E-mail Service at Talanto Technologies. "Web-based services provide users with better mobility, ease-of-use, cost-effectiveness and are faster and more flexible in delivering new cutting-edge e-mail service."

CMAIL.RU was developed in 2000 solely by Talanto Technologies. Currently, the engine is licensed for use on two other e-mail services - Automail.ru and Sportmail.ru. The company is constantly striving to extend its service spectrum, and to improve the quality of e-mail services offered, and the development priority is totally secured e-mail and guaranteed confidentiality. Thanks to Kaspersky® Anti-Virus (AVP), Talanto Technologies now provides users with the industry's highest level of virus protection allowing for real-time e-mail traffic anti-virus scanning.

The next step in the company's development will be providing protected authorization in the user environment by means of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Internet-protocol enabling secure traffic transactions between a client computer and e-mail server. Talanto Technologies has already acquired a certificate for using this protocol from VeriSign, one of the world's leaders in data-security systems.

"Our immediate plans include the development of a widely scalable system allowing organizations to create their own Web-based e-mail services for use within their corporate network. This will inherit all the advanced features available in CMAIL.RU, including secure e-mail processing and transfer," added Andrew Matveev.

Kaspersky Lab has been providing free virus protection for free e-mail services for nearly two years. The partners list, which includes systems that support about 2 million e-mail accounts for people all around the world, is comprised of such e-mail services as CHAT.RU, FREEMAIL.RU, iNAME.RU, EZMAIL.RU, NETMAIL.KG, PRIMORYE.RU, GOMAIL.COM.UA etc. If you are running a free public e-mail resource and would like to improve your services by implementing a free virus protection system, we encourage you to contact us at denis@kaspersky.com.
